Do Not Write as You Would Speak: Unnecessary Modifiers (Ryan Sieg)This is a featured page

When speaking, one often uses modifiers such as, 'really,' 'definitely,' and 'basically,' among others. In most cases, these modifiers should not be used while writing.

For example:
Steve actually played a good game today. He made virtually no mistakes on the field and scored basically all of our team's goals.

This sentence should be:
Steve played well today. His play was excellent, as he scored three goals.
