Gene Dickerson's Use of The Comma. This is a featured page

The use of commas is sometimes questionable with it's application. However, there are some constants will always apply.

For Example: When using a series of three or more items such as:
I have one apple, one orange, two grapes, and pear.

Commas are also used to indicate the interruption in the flow of a sentence such as:
For Example: His instructor, Dr. Krause is a very good English instructor.

Commas are used to seperate abbreviations such as: EMU, MSU, WSU, and WMU.
Sometimes as in the above example, a comma would be placed at the end of WSU, in order to complete the sentence.

Parenthetical expressions have various rules that can not be ignored, although there are rules that can be used at a writers dicretion.
My rule is: Apply and adhere to all parenthetical rules that are concrete, and use the rule of sentence structure, rythm, and logic in other instances.

Gene, since you have your rule here and another page too, I decided to delete that other page. Hopefully that's okay....

emdickerson09 Comma Use. 0 Feb 15 2009, 1:49 PM EST by emdickerson09

After reading The Elements of Style. I started thinking about what it was that I learned about comma's in my younger years. If I remember correctly, commas were used as a breathe if you were speaking or reading something out loud. Every time you took a breathe, that was where the comma was supposed to be inserted. Long sentences or two sentences were always broken up with a comma. I have always thought that the use of a comma was discretionary however , Its use does follow a set of standard rules. I decided on commas because its use is wide spread and sometimes questionable. Its parenthetical use with one expression or another accoding the "rules" of usage have bothered me while writing for a long time. I have always thought that I used commas correctly, but after reading The Elements of Style, I now wonder if I have used them correctly. I have had students in classes that would essays and never use a comma at all. I have also had students that would insert commas every three or four words. Exploring the rule surrounding the proper use of Commas should be interesting, educational, and fun.
