Style Rules Table of ContentsThis is a featured page

This is the "Table of Contents" page for the Style Rules. To set up your rule, do the following:
  • While on this page, click the "Add page" icon," which is at the bottom of the left-hand column.
  • Create a page, and make sure that the location information for the page says:
"Home > Style Rules Table of Contents > new page
  • Start typing.
  • Save your rule page with a title that makes sense for the rule and that also indicates your name-- for example "Apostrophe S (Krause)." If you want, you can use a first name and an initial, though if you do that, make sure you list what section of English 328 you are in-- either 27792 or 27793.
  • Any questions about this? Ask them in the discussion area of this page.

I like controversy so I chose to make my rule about gender and pronouns/ word choice. The rule/s I am adding to can be found on p60 of Strunk and White's The Elements of Style and p 34-35 of Williams Style .
"Never use a pronoun such as he or she unless 1. there is one subject being referred to. 2. and it is known the gender of that subject or 3. if multiple subjects there is only one gender, such as the women. Otherwise use they or their. And for words like policeman or mankind, substitute them with words such as police officer or humankind."

I decided to create a rule based on my own writing style. I tend to write in a style that represents my thinking…so I wrote about sentence flow and the use of ellipsis so...

When writing for comic effect, sentence flow should be interrupted with ellipsis...duh!
