Use Correct SpellingThis is a featured page

By Gordon Wykes

With increased internet use and use of alternative spellings in advertisements, more writers are incorporating non-traditional spellings of words. This not only creates confusion with people unaware of the language of the internet, but also demonstrates an inability to understand appropriateness, audience, and distinguishing between types of language. While slang is also inappropriate, this violation is much worse, and the only probable application is writing a literary internet chat or a specialized website. Here are some examples with corrections.

His shoes were really kewl. (cool)
I asked him if that’s correct, he said that’s rite. (right)
The Smashing Pumpkins are alright. (all right)
The man removed his labtop from his case and started typing. (laptop)

I'll be curious to see how this works out in your essay, Gordon. Since neither book talks about spelling at all, this could be kind of tricky to work out.

I agree with your post here. I fall into the bad spelling category. I think it is a genetic trait in my family! I think people tend to spell phonetically more than anything else now, and with the age of spell check we do not need to be congnisent of our spelling. Speaking of, where is the spell check for this wiki site?
